SUMMARY:A Practical Approach to Managing Gear Noise
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\n\n\n\nFormat: Live Online \n\n\n\nDate: May 12-13\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, May 12 – 10:00am-2:00pm CT\n\n\n\nWednesday\, May 13 – 10:00am-2:00pm CT\n\n\n\n\nA Practical Approach to Managing Gear Noise\n\n\n\nA Practical Approach for Managing Gear Noise” combines theory with practical testing and simulation techniques used to manage gear noise.  Topics focus on insights into the mechanisms for both whine and rattle\, the two most common categories of gear “noise”.  The course presents clear explanations relating subjective evaluations of audible noise to objective actions\, including troubleshooting and countermeasures.  Concepts are supported with a number of sound and movie files.  Technical papers supporting certain concepts are cited for the students’ further study.   \n\n\n\nYou will earn 8 clock hours upon completion of the course and they will be listed on your certificate of completion.\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\n\nExplanation of the underlying physics of gear noise generation mechanisms for whine and rattle\n\n\n\nExposure to vibration and sound instrumentation and testing techniques used to characterize whine and rattle\n\n\n\nIntroductions to advanced simulation tools for understanding the underlying physics of gear whine and rattle\, with insight into troubleshooting and countermeasures.\n\n\n\nDevelopment of a strategy for setting gearbox sound and vibration target levels\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nCourse outline (PDF)\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Rates\n\n\n\nMember Rates\n\n\n\nEarly Bird Registrant – $600(Deadline until 2/28/26) \n\n\n\nRegular Registrant – $650(Deadline: 3/1/26 – 4/14/26) \n\n\n\nLate Registrant – $675(Deadline: 4/15/26 – 4/28/26) \n\n\n\nNON-MEMBER RATE\n\n\n\nEarly Bird Registrant – $700(Deadline until 2/28/26) \n\n\n\nRegular Registrant – $750(Deadline: 4/1/26 – 4/14/26) \n\n\n\nLate Registrant – $775(Deadline: 4/15/26 – 4/28/26) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend\n\n\n\nThis course is intended for those with several years of bearing knowledge involving the design\, application\, selection and use of rolling element bearings.  A basic knowledge of the bearing types\, tolerances\, part numbers\, bearing terminology and load calculations are required.  A technical degree or training is suggested.  \n\n\n\nInstructors\n\n\n\nRobert White\n\nBob White PhD\, PE is a Drivetrain NVH engineer with 37 years of experience.  For 31 of those years he worked at John Deere’s Product Engineering Center in drivetrain development\, touching nearly every transmission and axle produced by Deere. He specialized in making dynamic measurements and is especially known for his work in mitigating gear noise. He continues to do drivetrain problem solving through his company\, White Noise\, LLC. Bob is a member of the AGMA Sound & Vibration committee.  Contact him at RobertWhite@WhiteNoiseUSA.com. \n\n\n\nPhoto Release\n\n\n\nFrom time to time MPMA uses photographs\, survey answers and testimonial of MPMA events in its promotional materials. Unless this permission is revoked in writing to the MPMA\, by virtue of your attendance all attendees agree to the use of their likeness in such materials. \n\n\n\nCancellation and Payment Policy\n\n\n\nPlease view our cancellation policy. \n\n\n\nPlease view our late registration policy. \n\n\n\nPlease view our code of conduct.
