SUMMARY:Reverse Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\n\n\n\nFormat: Live Online Virtual Training \n\n\n\nDate: November 4-5\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, November 4 – 10:00-2:00pm CT\n\n\n\nThursday\, November 5 – 10:00-2:00pm CT\n\n\n\n\nReverse Gear System Engineering: Why\, When\, & How – Avoiding Pitfalls & Litigation\n\n\n\nReverse engineering a gear system is a not too unusual task and in many\, but not all\, cases the process goes fairly well\, thus it is easy to become complacent. It is important\, however\, to fully understand the process and the best practice procedure for reverse engineering a gear system. Failure to fully follow best practice can result\, at best\, in an unhappy gear user\, but in the worst case it can lead to very expensive\, time consuming and reputation damaging litigation.  \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the basic types of reverse engineering projects (e.g. upgrading an existing system to increase power or extend operating life or improve noise level; replacing gear that has simply reached the end of its otherwise successful useful life; emergency\, short term\, interim gear replacement resulting from an unexpected failure; responding to a system that is not providing acceptable performance\, etc.). The need for understanding the operation of the system in which the gears will be used\, the conditions that led to the need for the project and especially\, the specific nature of the failure that occurred\, if that is the reason for the project\, are key\, often ignored\, elements of the process.  \n\n\n\nIn some cases\, no drawings are available at all thus a design must be developed that will yield gears that provide equivalent load capacity\, life\, noise performance and smoothness of operation.  This scenario will be discussed with recommended analyses resented. In other cases\, where no drawings are available\, the correct procedures to follow in developing a reverse engineered gear that truly meets the system requirements will be discussed in detail with cautionary procedures outlined.   \n\n\n\nThe concept of applying the AVO (avoid verbal orders) process to the overall reverse engineering process will be discussed with fact based but names and identifying details eliminated case studies to emphasize the importance of this concept.  The “amnesia” issue will also be addressed in this context. The author’s experience in serving as an Expert Witness provides first-hand information that will aid in avoiding this aspect of a reverse engineering project completed…if followed! \n\n\n\nA webcam on your computer equipped with a microphone and speakers/headset are required for participation. Space is limited to 20-25 participants per course. Course materials will be mailed in hard copy. Please make sure to indicate your preferred mailing address in the registration process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nCourse outline (PDF)\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Rates\n\n\n\nEarly Bird Registrant – $600(Deadline until 8/21/26) \n\n\n\nRegular Registrant – $650(Deadline: 8/22/26 – 10/7/26) \n\n\n\nLate Registrant – $675(Deadline: 10/8/26 – 10/21/26) \n\n\n\nNON-MEMBER RATE\n\n\n\nEarly Bird Registrant – $700(Deadline until 8/21/26) \n\n\n\nRegular Registrant – $750(Deadline: 8/22/26 – 10/7/26) \n\n\n\nLate Registrant – $775(Deadline: 10/8/26 – 10/21/26) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will earn 8 clock hours upon completion of the course and they will be listed on your certificate of completion.\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\n\nRecognize the detailed engineering and application understanding required to properly reverse engineer a gear\n\n\n\nUnderstand the difference between designing from scratch and designing to duplicate an existing part and its function\n\n\n\nConsider the reasons why reverse engineering an existing gear set\, or\, especially\, a single gear can often considerably more difficult than designing a new gear or gear set from scratch\n\n\n\nDiscuss the possibilities for misunderstanding\, which are legion\, between purchaser and supplier\n\n\n\nAddress the need for all parties involved to agree regarding the purpose of the reverse engineering effort and the expected results and costs\n\n\n\nApply an understanding of forensic analysis of gearbox failures to avoid simply duplicating the original failure\n\n\n\nUnderstand the difference between a temporary replacement and a duplicate of the original gear and the discussion and documentation required to avoid misunderstandings that can lead to litigation\n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend\n\n\n\nGear and gearbox design and manufacturing engineers\, management and quality control engineers involved with design and manufacture of reverse engineered parts\, especially where minimal or no original\, detailed gear design information is available. \n\n\n\nInstructors\n\n\n\n\nRaymond J. Drago\, P.E.\n\nRaymond J. Drago is Chief Engineer of Drive Systems Technology\, Inc. (DST)\, a mechanical power transmission consulting organization that he founded in 1976. Mr. Drago also worked for the Boeing Company – Helicopters Division until his retirement after 37 years of service. SUMMARY:161: Navigating AGMA's Gear Industry Standards
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\n\n\n\nFormat: Live Online Virtual Training \n\n\n\n\n\nDate: April 27\, 2027 \n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 27 – 12:00-2:00pm ET\n\n\n\n\nfundamentals of motion and power systems – 161\n\n\n\nThis is a practitioner’s guide to selecting and applying the right standard or information sheet. This two-hour course gives gear industry professionals a practical foundation for navigating the standards and information sheets published by AGMA\, and their associated ANSI and ISO documents. Rather than treating the standards library as a fixed reference shelf\, the course walks through how these organizations relate to one another\, how documents are developed and kept current\, and who maintains them. The centerpiece of the course is a decision framework for choosing the correct standard or information sheet for a given design\, analysis\, or review — helping participants avoid the common and costly mistake of citing the wrong\, outdated\, or misapplied document. \n\n\n\nYou will earn 2 clock hours upon completion of the course and they will be listed on your certificate of completion.\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\n\nDistinguish the roles of AGMA\, ANSI\, and ISO and how a document moves between them\n\n\n\nExplain how AGMA and ISO documents are developed\, reviewed\, reaffirmed\, revised\, or withdrawn\n\n\n\nIdentify the AGMA Technical Committees and ISO/TC 60 working groups behind key documents\n\n\n\nDifferentiate an AGMA Standard from an Information Sheet\, and their ISO counterparts (ISO Standard\, ISO/TS\, ISO/TR)\n\n\n\nApply a decision framework to select the correct standard or information sheet for a design\, analysis\, or review task\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now\n\n\n\nCourse outline (PDF)\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Rates\n\n\n\nMEMBER RATE\n\n\n\nRegular Registrant – $49(Deadline: 4/13/27) \n\n\n\nNON-MEMBER RATE\n\n\n\nRegular Registrant – $99(Deadline: 4/13/27) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho Should Attend\n\n\n\nGear design engineers\, manufacturing and quality engineers\, and technical managers who reference AGMA\, ANSI\, or ISO documents in their work but have limited exposure to how the standards system itself is organized\, maintained\, and governed. \n\n\n\nInstructor\n\n\n\nComing Soon \n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Release\n\n\n\nMPMA may use photographs\, survey responses\, and testimonials from its events in promotional materials.
