Intermediate Level
Develop an understanding of the key relationships among steel composition, processing, and properties. Learn how to select and specify steel composition and heat treatment options that optimize gear performance and comply with AGMA rating standards.
You will earn 18 clock hours upon completion of the course and they will be listed on your certificate of completion.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize basic gear terminology, geometry, and operating concepts.
- Distinguish between different gear failure modes and the factors that contribute to them.
- Understand basic principles of metal structure and behavior.
- Become familiar with common steel alloy designations and nomenclature.
- Select steel compositions and heat treatments that produce properties that meet the demands of the application and AGMA gear rating standards.
- Understand the influence of steel selection and heat treatment on the manufacturing and performance of gears.
- Learn how to specify and verify required steel properties.
- Compare the gear performance of steels produced in cast, wrought, powder metallurgy, and additive manufacturing forms.
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for gear designers, engineers, metallurgists, heat treatment specialists, quality professionals, technical sales personnel, and managers involved in the specification, manufacture, or performance evaluation of steel gearing.

Instructors

Carl Ribaudo
Dr. Ribaudo’s career in metallurgy combines extensive experience in both industry and education. During his 30 years with The Timken Company, he provided subject matter expertise and project leadership in material and process selection, performance testing, specification writing, and supplier development for bearings, gears, and other components, as well as steel mill process development. He co-holds three U.S. patents related to this work. He then spent six years teaching lecture and laboratory courses in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at The University of Akron. He has served AGMA for more than two decades in roles including course developer and instructor, article reviewer, Metallurgy and Materials Committee Chair, and U.S. delegate to ISO Working Group 14 for Strength and Quality of Materials for Gears. He is currently the proprietor of C2 Metals LLC, which focuses on developing intellectual property and educational experiences related to materials. He holds a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, an S.M. in Materials Engineering from MIT, and a Ph.D. in Metallurgy from the University of Illinois.
