Eliminate Distortion by Engineering your Heat Treatment Quench with 4DQ
It is well known that distortion has and continues to present a challenge to the heat treater when hardening/carburizing gears. However, recent advances in quenching technology are improving the opportunity for improved distortion control. 4 Dimension High-Pressure Gas Quenching (4DQ) is a unique gas quenching process that uses both a special quenching chamber design with part rotation to minimize distortion during the quenching process. 4DQ gives one the ability to “engineer” the quenching process by controlling quench pressure, gas velocity, gas manifold design, table rotation, table oscillation, and time-dependent gas flow. The system's flexibility allows users to customize the quenching process for reduced distortion, providing repeatability and precise accuracy in their heat treatment.

Laser Powder DED – Technical Overview
By using inert argon gas to continuously spray metal powder from a nozzle, the laser melts and solidifies the powder with base materials to manufacture an intended shape. DED metal 3D printers are used for multi-layer materials and components composed of multiple different materials. With an optional second hopper providing powdered metal, LAMDA systems can switch materials during a manufacturing process producing functional gradient materials, which are printed by changing the blend of materials during the manufacturing process. Powder directed energy deposition offers a higher deposition rate than powder bed fusion, and, with the introduction of new technology, the process is ideal for printing very large structures as well as adding features to existing components and for repair.

Practical Challenges in Predicting Gear Reliability Utilizing Big Data and Digital Twins
Gear rating methods such as ISO 6336 output calculations for gear life, implying that it can predict gear reliability, or how many gears will fail in any set of loading conditions. The real situation is not so simple. This webinar investigates the reasons why, and makes recommendations on what can be done, both now and in the future. It goes on to discuss an initiative by Hexagon where cloud-based Digital Twins are being used to harvest data from in-service vehicles to obtain duty cycles on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis. It will be shown how the abundance of data can be used to derive greater accuracy in gear life calculations, whilst still being based on ISO 6336.

How Clean Steels Support Emerging Automotive Gear & Bearing Technologies
Nonmetallic inclusions are particles inherent to the steelmaking process that are known to reduce the fatigue life on parts exposed to continuous stresses. Steel producers are challenged to minimize inclusions and ultimately reduce detrimental effects on the final product.
